Not less than twenty years or so ago, distance learning wasn't as respected nearly as much as it is today. Traditional, campus-based institutions were much more preferable over online colleges and universities. But thankfully, today the average person with a busy life and numerous responsibilities and obligations can pursue a higher degree without uprooting his families or settling for a sub-par academic experience.

It's great that there are so many different schools online to choose from to pursue your degree. This is the draw for many people, especially those who are very busy. The idea that they can work, raise a family, and still carve out time for studies contributes to the large number of non-traditional students who want to pursue their educational goals later in life.

It's also a draw that the convenience of online learning allows the student to be flexible in his studies by studying when it's convenient for him, even if that's 2:00 a.m. Also, with the sophistication of many online colleges and their communication systems, the student can shoot off an email to his advisor or professor, upload his homework and even chat and dialogue with other students.

If online universities and pursuing degrees online had been as popular twenty years ago as it is now, would the landscape of academics be more advanced? Would the nation be further along in its educational rankings than it is now? There's no way to accurately gauge whether it would be or not. However, distance learning degrees are right on par with campus-based degrees in terms of being respected by employers, difficulty in subject matter, and an expectation of excellence from the students. When students get their degrees and canvas the job market for employment, they'll find that all of their hard work has paid off when they put out job feelers, circulate their resume, and compete for high-paying positions.
