There has been a lot of bad press lately about for-profit online universities, including a federal report on deceptive recruitment practices and Congressional investigations highlighting the low graduation rates. Federal student loan data also has shown that students at these schools borrow more and default more than those at public institutions.
These reports have led some to wonder whether for-profit education is a bad idea in general. However, when focusing in on individual for-profit institutions, it is possible to find some innovative ideas that could also benefit the public sector schools. For example, these schools often do a better job of ensuring that needy students get access to the aid for which they are eligible. For-profits have also been ahead of the curve in online education technology, with some of these schools developing new learning tools that are cost-effective and appealing to students.
